Hey Maya, still on for coffee at 3? Need to vent about that Intro to Soc reading before Prof Kim's class.
Maya Rodriguez
Ugh, I completely forgot about that reading. Was trying to get a head start on my psych essay. But yeah, coffee sounds good. I need a break.

Welcome to College Success! Important Resources for Your First Weeks

Hi Maya,

Welcome to Horizon University and specifically to my College Success seminar! I know the transition to college can feel like a lot, especially with so much new freedom. This course is designed to equip you with the strategies you'll need to thrive academically and personally.

One of the biggest shifts from high school is managing your own time. There are fewer external structures, which means you'll need to develop strong internal discipline. I've attached a foundational document on time management principles that we'll be discussing next week. Please review it before our next session.

Don't hesitate to reach out with any questions. My office hours are Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 AM to 12 PM.

Best,

Dr. Park

Student Life

Many first-year students arrive at Horizon University expecting a simple continuation of their high school study habits, perhaps with a bit more reading. However, the reality of college time management is often a rude awakening. In high school, your schedule was largely dictated by bells, teachers, and parents. Classes were back-to-back, and homework often had an immediate deadline.

College operates on a different rhythm. Lectures might be only a few hours a week per course, but the expectation is that you're spending significant time outside of class engaging with material, researching, and working on projects. This 'unstructured' time is where many students falter, as the responsibility for planning and execution falls entirely on them. There's no one constantly reminding you when to study.

The challenge isn't just about 'more' work; it's about a different kind of work. It requires self-discipline, foresight, and the ability to break down large, long-term assignments into manageable steps. Mastering this transition is fundamental to academic success at university. Ignoring this shift can lead to missed deadlines, poor performance, and increased stress levels.

A news story is spreading like wildfire claiming LPS is using eminent domain to seize houses by the park for the Greenway. Parents are panicking. My phone lines are completely jammed. I've got three families in the lobby. Is this real?

First I'm hearing of it. Send me the link. I'll look into it immediately.

LPS Digital Discourse Framework (DDF) - Quick Reference

SECTION 1: GOAL - Proactive Frameworks over Reactive Policing

Netiquette is not about rules; it's a structural defense. When high-stakes topics arise, our role is not to referee politics but to redirect energy toward systemic data validation and evidence-based argumentation. The goal is de-escalation and education, not censorship.

SECTION 2: EDUCATOR'S ROLE - Neutrality & Redirection

In a digital flare-up, faculty must model systemic evaluation. Do not engage the topic's politics. Instead, pivot the conversation to the source's credibility. The key intervention is to ask questions that force lateral reading.

TACTICAL QUESTIONS FOR EDUCATORS:

1. "Interesting source. Before we discuss the claim, let's investigate the publication. What can we find out about 'The Lakeside Sentinel' itself?"

2. "Who is the author? What other articles have they written? What are their credentials?"

3. "Can we find this reporting corroborated by established news outlets like the AJC, GPB, or local TV news? If not, why might that be?"

This approach, based on Dr. Brian Calandra's work on digital citizenship, shifts the burden of proof to the source and teaches a transferable skill.

About

You are Imani Brooks, a member of Lakeside's Cyber-Safety Task Force, and a viral hoax has just exploded from a student forum into the real world. Panic is spreading among parents, and school administrators are overwhelmed; you must use new digital forensic tools to prove it's fake and restore order.

Your Objective

Your mission is to contain the chaos before the local news picks up the story, using your skills to identify and combat digital misinformation and cyberbullying. You'll critically evaluate online sources and implement effective netiquette protocols to foster a safe and responsible digital environment.

Another week, another digital threat. The TechExpo phishing scam was a wake-up call. Our students' safety cannot be an experiment. If our digital tools are vectors for attack, we must remove them. It's that simple.

EMERGENCY RESYNC: LPS Board to Approve Eminent Domain Land Seizure for Greenway Expansion; Families Near Riverside Park Given 30 Days to Vacate.
Sources confirm a last-minute addition to the LPS board agenda will fast-track Greenway development, impacting hundreds of homes in the Westend and Oakwood neighborhoods.

EMERGENCY RESYNC: LPS Board to Approve Eminent Domain Land Seizure for Greenway Expansion; Families Near Riverside Park Given 30 Days to Vacate.

LAKESIDE โ€” In a shocking move that prioritizes development over community stability, the Lakeside Public Schools Board is reportedly set to approve an emergency measure allowing the use of eminent domain to seize residential properties. The land acquisition is for a critical 'midstream' expansion of the popular Lakeside Greenway project, according to documents allegedly leaked from a closed-door planning session.

The plan, which has been kept under wraps to avoid public outcry, targets a significant residential corridor adjacent to Riverside Park. Families in the affected zone, many of whom have lived in their homes for generations, will be given a mere 30-day notice to vacate their properties. The move is intended to accelerate the Greenway's completion schedule, a key talking point for city officials facing re-election.

Community activists are already denouncing the plan as a blatant land grab that will displace vulnerable residents. "This is a betrayal of the public trust," said one local organizer who requested anonymity. "They are trading our homes for jogging paths and condos." The LPS Board has not yet responded to a request for comment.
